Ottawa's Elite Choice for Swimming Lessons

Baby Swim Lessons in Ottawa: What Parents Should Know

Can my baby start swim lessons, and at what age?

Yes. Our Aquatic Centre in Nepean teaches babies from 4 months old, in warm salt-water pools. Babies and toddlers up to 36 months start in a Koala group class with a parent in the water, or in a one-on-one coached lesson. If you have health questions about your baby and the pool, ask your doctor first.

This guide explains how baby lessons work, what the first class looks like, and how to choose between a group class and a private lesson. It is written for parents choosing lessons in Ottawa for the first time.

What baby swim lessons are (and are not)

For a baby, a swim lesson is about comfort in the water, not strokes. The early goals are simple: enjoying the pool, getting used to water on the face, floating with support, and moving with a parent holding them. Skills build slowly from there.

Lessons do not make a child safe around water on their own. The Lifesaving Society and the Red Cross both stress that lessons are one layer of protection and that a baby or toddler needs an adult within arm's reach whenever they are near water. Treat lessons as a way to build skills and confidence alongside supervision, never instead of it.

Group class or private lesson for a baby?

Both start at 4 months. The right choice depends on your family.

  • Group class (Koala level): for babies and toddlers from 4 months to 36 months. A parent takes part in the water. Our low-ratio group classes are small, and most are capped at 3 swimmers.
  • Private coached lesson: one-on-one instruction in a quieter setting. It suits a baby who is easily overwhelmed, or a family with a specific goal. See our coached lessons.
  • Lil' Hippo and other baby swim times: relaxed sessions listed under our specialty classes.

Not sure where to start? We offer a complimentary swim evaluation and facility tour, so you can see the pools and talk to the team before you register.

Why a warm pool matters for babies

Babies lose body heat faster than older children, so a warm pool makes a real difference to how long they stay happy. Our lessons take place in warm salt-water pools at the Aquatic Centre, in a quiet setting where babies are less likely to be startled by noise and crowds. Salt water is also gentle on many swimmers, though if your baby has sensitive skin, ask your doctor.

What to expect at the first class

Plan to arrive a little early so nobody is rushed. There are individual change rooms, a private washroom and a hair-drying station, and seating areas where parents who are not in the pool can watch.

In a Koala class, the instructor leads songs, games and simple skills while you hold and move with your baby. Expect short attention spans, some fussing, and plenty of splashing. It is normal for a first class to be mostly about getting comfortable.

Skills are checked off as your child shows them, and parents receive an email each time a completed skill is added to their child's profile in our booking system, so you can follow progress without guessing.

How babies move through the swim levels

Our Swim Like a Hippo program has seven levels for ages 4 months to 14 years, starting with Koala and moving through Hedgehog, Flamingo, Penguin, Capybara, Tiger and Hippo. Babies begin in Koala. As they grow and show the skills, they move on at their own pace, and the parent steps out of the water after the Koala level.

Getting your baby ready

  • Bring a swim diaper and a towel or hooded towel for your baby.
  • Pack a change of clothes and a warm layer for after the class.
  • Time the lesson between feeds and naps, so your baby is calm and not hungry.
  • Keep it light: a calm parent usually means a calmer baby.
  • If your baby has a cold or is unwell, check our terms and conditions for the illness and make-up policy before you come.

Water safety for parents

Lessons help, but supervision does the most work. From Lifesaving Society and Red Cross guidance: stay within arm's reach of babies and toddlers in or near water, empty baths and buckets right after use, and make sure any pool at home is fenced. Learn infant and child CPR if you can.

Baby swim lessons: frequently asked questions

How old does my baby need to be for swim lessons?+

The youngest we teach is 4 months old, in a group class or a coached lesson. For any health question about your baby and the water, ask your doctor.

Do I need to be in the pool with my baby?+

In Koala group classes (ages 4 months to 36 months), a parent takes part in the water. In older levels, only staff and swimmers are on the pool deck, and parents watch from the viewing areas.

Is a private lesson better than a group class for a baby?+

Neither is better. Group classes are small and social. A coached lesson is one-on-one and quieter, which helps some babies and some families. A complimentary evaluation can help you decide.

Will baby swim lessons make my child safe in water?+

No. Lessons build comfort and skills, but the Lifesaving Society and the Red Cross both say a young child always needs an adult within arm's reach near water.
