Ottawa's Elite Choice for Swimming Lessons
How to Choose a Swim School in Ottawa: A Parent Checklist
How do I choose a swim school in Ottawa?
Choose a swim school by checking six things: who teaches, how many swimmers are in each class, how warm and quiet the pool is, how progress is tracked, how booking and cancellations work, and whether you can try it first. A good school will answer all six plainly, and let you see the pool before you register.
This guide is a checklist for parents choosing swim lessons in Ottawa for the first time. At the end, you will find how Hippo in the Bathtub answers each question at our Aquatic Centre in Nepean, so you can compare any school against the same list.
1. Ask what lesson types are on offer
Swimmers learn differently, and one format does not suit everyone. Ask whether the school offers one-on-one lessons, small group classes, or both, and whether you can switch between them as your child grows.
- One-on-one lessons suit nervous swimmers, children who learn best with full attention, and swimmers with a specific skill to work on.
- Small group classes suit children and adults who learn well alongside others, and they bring a social side to learning.
- A school that offers both lets you start in one and move to the other. See our coached lessons and low-ratio group classes.
2. Ask how many swimmers are in each class
The number of swimmers per instructor decides how much attention your child gets. Ask for the maximum class size, not the average, and ask whether it applies to every class. Our low-ratio group classes are small, and most are capped at 3 swimmers.
A small class does not guarantee a good one, so watch a lesson if the school lets you, and notice whether each child is getting turns and feedback.
3. Check the pool: warmth, noise and space
Cold water and loud, crowded pool decks are two of the most common reasons children stop enjoying lessons. Ask what the water temperature is, and ask when the pool is busiest.
- Warmth: our lessons take place in warm salt-water pools, which helps swimmers stay comfortable and focused, especially babies and young children.
- Noise and crowds: a quieter pool makes it easier for nervous swimmers to settle.
- Facilities: look for change rooms, a private washroom, a place to dry hair and seating where parents can watch. Our Aquatic Centre has all of these.
4. Ask who teaches, and how they are supported
Instructors matter more than the building. Ask how instructors are trained, how experienced they are, and whether the school has people who are comfortable teaching swimmers with extra needs or fears. At Hippo in the Bathtub, our senior coaches are our most experienced instructors, and they have experience teaching swimmers with special needs.
It is reasonable to ask these questions directly. A school that is proud of its team will be glad to talk about it.
5. Ask how progress is tracked
A clear set of levels lets you see where your child is and what comes next. Our Swim Like a Hippo program has seven levels for ages 4 months to 14 years: Koala, Hedgehog, Flamingo, Penguin, Capybara, Tiger and Hippo.
Ask how you will hear about progress. At our school, skills are checked off as a child shows them, and parents receive an email each time a completed skill is added to their child's profile in our booking system.
6. Understand booking and cancellations before you pay
Read the policies before you register, not after. Ask how bookings work, how cancellations are credited, what happens if the school cancels, and how refunds are handled. Our terms and conditions and our cancellation policies are posted on the site, and coached lessons are booked one at a time through our online booking system, so you can fit them around school and activities.
A school should also be clear about what happens when a swimmer is sick. If you are not sure, ask before the first class.
7. Try it first
The best test of a swim school is to see it. We offer a complimentary swim evaluation and facility tour, so you can see the pools, meet the team and find out which level or lesson type fits your child before you register. Ask any school you are considering whether they offer something similar.
Bring your child if you can. How a child reacts to the pool and the staff tells you a lot.
A one-page parent checklist
- What lesson types do you offer, and can we switch between them?
- What is the maximum number of swimmers in a class?
- How warm is the water, and how busy is the pool?
- Who will teach my child, and what is their experience?
- How will I know what my child has learned?
- How do booking, cancellations and refunds work?
- Can we have an evaluation or a tour before registering?
Print or screenshot this list and take it with you when you visit.
A word on water safety
Swim lessons build skills and confidence, but they do not make a child safe around water on their own. The Lifesaving Society and the Red Cross both stress active adult supervision near water, and young children need an adult within arm's reach. Treat lessons as one layer alongside supervision, fencing for home pools, and learning basic first aid and CPR. If you have health questions about your child and the pool, ask your doctor.
