Ottawa's Elite Choice for Swimming Lessons

Private Swimming Lessons in Ottawa: How to Choose

What are private swimming lessons, and who are they for?

A private swimming lesson is one-on-one instruction with a coach, in a quieter setting than a group class. At our Aquatic Centre in Nepean, our coached lessons are 30 minutes long, in a warm salt-water pool, for children and adults. They suit swimmers who are nervous, who learn best with full attention, or who have a specific skill to work on.

This guide helps parents (and adults) decide between a private lesson and a small group class, and explains what to ask before you book.

Private lesson or group class?

Neither is better. The right choice depends on the swimmer.

  • Choose a private (coached) lesson if the swimmer is nervous or easily overwhelmed, needs a quiet space, wants to work on one skill, or has needs that call for a customized approach.
  • Choose a low-ratio group class if the swimmer enjoys learning alongside other children, would like to move through the seven swim levels with a class, or you want to register siblings or friends together.
  • Not sure? Start with a complimentary swim evaluation, so a coach can see the swimmer in the water and suggest a starting point.

Senior and junior coached lessons

We offer two kinds of private lesson. Senior coached lessons take place in a completely private pool area, with only one lesson scheduled at a time. The water is kept warm so lessons can happen without shivering. Our senior coaches are our most experienced instructors, and they have experience teaching swimmers with special needs.

Junior coached lessons take place in the main pool area of the Aquatic Centre. Senior lessons suit swimmers over the age of 15 as well as younger swimmers who need a very quiet setting, and adult lessons are available in both formats.

How booking works

Coached lessons are drop-in services that are booked one at a time through our online booking system. You can view coach availability there. If the time you want is taken, you can add yourself to the waitlist online. New clients can ask about a trial coached lesson before committing to more.

Because lessons are booked individually, you can fit them around school, work and activities, and mix private lessons with group classes if that suits your family.

Questions to ask before you book any private lesson

  • How long is the lesson, and what is the pool temperature? Cold water makes it hard for a child to focus.
  • Who is teaching, and how do they adapt to different ages and abilities?
  • Will anyone else be in the pool during the lesson?
  • What happens if my child is sick or I need to cancel? Read the terms and conditions for the policy.
  • How will I know what my child has learned?

A practical checklist for the first private lesson

  • Tell the coach about any fears, past experiences and goals before the lesson starts.
  • Arrive early so there is time to change without rushing.
  • Pack a towel, a change of clothes and a warm layer for afterwards.
  • Keep your own comments light and encouraging; a calm parent helps a nervous swimmer.
  • Watch from the seating area and ask the coach for one skill to practise before the next lesson.
  • If you have any health question about the swimmer and the water, ask your doctor.

What a private lesson usually focuses on

Because the coach is working with one swimmer, the lesson follows that swimmer's needs rather than a fixed class plan. For a beginner, that often means getting comfortable with water on the face, floating and kicking with support. For a swimmer who already has the basics, it might mean breathing, one stroke, or a skill they have been stuck on in a group class.

Thirty minutes is a good length for most children. It is long enough to practise something properly and short enough that a young swimmer does not get cold or tired. If a swimmer wants more practice, several lessons can be booked over a few weeks, one at a time.

Is a private lesson right for a nervous swimmer?

Often, yes. A nervous swimmer can struggle in a busy class where there is noise, waiting and other children to watch. A quiet pool, one coach and a slower pace let a child build trust at their own speed. Fear of water is common and normal, and it usually eases with patient, repeated, positive time in the water.

Some families use a few private lessons to build confidence, then move into a small group class once the swimmer is ready. Others stay with private lessons because they work well. Both paths are fine, and you can change your mind as your child grows.

Lessons are one layer of water safety

The Lifesaving Society and the Red Cross both stress that swim lessons build skills but do not make a child safe on their own. Children need active adult supervision near water, and young children need an adult within arm's reach. Treat lessons as one layer alongside supervision, fencing and learning basic first aid and CPR.
